I’m finding more and more in life that taking things seriously is pretty overrated, and to find the humour in everything - including problems, is a great way to get over them.

This ‘diary of my songwriting’ has taken an 8 year break.. In which I have made 3 full (sensational) albums as ‘Mahoney & The Moment’ with Emily.

After the latest one ‘Confession Note’ I had quite an iffy time personally. I came out of that not by writing and singing songs about myself, but by creating a podcast that was comedy led, and rejuvenated me.

Being a musician in 2019 is extremely challenging.. and has been increasingly so for 10 years. The promoting / marketing of it all is unhealthy and soul destroying, maybe even a bit masochistic at this point.. All that has led me to the condition that, I have to enjoy doing it.. so that brings us to ‘Can’t Get Arrested!’

After ‘Confession Note’ and performing at least every month for 8 years as Mahoney & The Moment, I had become fatigued of the introspective ‘serious’ music I was performing. I had also noticed that it takes more than singing a well written song to engage or entertain people in 2019.. to get them to pay attention in a noisy bar etc.

With this album, I was and still am a huge fan of the album ‘Everybody’s Rockin’ by Neil Young, and ‘Rock & Roll’ by John Lennon. These albums specifically influenced me as fun, brave, mood lifting records that an artist can enjoy performing, and get an audience going as well.

The bulk of the straight up comedy songs were written in the summer of 2014, actually before ‘Confession Note’, and a sales job that consumed me for nearly 5 years.
The writing system seemed to be; I came up with a title that made me laugh, and if the first line could keep me interested, i'd keep writing the song.

The Mill Island Band, were one of the many fantastic groups of musicians that passed through our monthly night at The Monarch in Camden over the years.. but probably the most fantastic.
This is for 3 reasons; they are sensational musicians that can improvise, they are easy going great guys that have a similar sense of humour and influences, and they play COVERS! I first started playing with them as they were the backbone of a few nights we ran where we covered ‘The Last Waltz’ concert, and they can play all of it easy.
Here along with the amazing Gabriella Romano & Emily on vocals, and Pete Dixon on Sax.. we are ‘The Milkshakes’!

This album was recorded in 6 hours in August 2018 in my hometown.. this is by far my favourite thing I’ve ever made.
I’ve rarely been able to hear my own music back, but ‘Can’t Get Arrested!’ is an exception and has really helped me personally and creatively, as I’ve finally been able to get my real personality and character into my music.. and enjoy it! x
