about

Premier Inn don’t do refunds, and it was for this reason I found myself in a budget hotel in Cambridge UK in April 2019. I went there as my mother in law was visiting from America, and I’d booked the hotel for a cancelled concert. I went there anyway.. alone for the night like Alan Partridge.

It was there, whilst listening to Cyndi Lauper's first album that I came up with the initial concept for 'The Second Wave'.
I wanted to make an 80’s album, as it was the type of music that was getting me going in the morning, to the gym etc on dark British mornings. The music is an enchanting, innocent memory for me.. and I of course obviously love ‘Born in the USA’ and ‘Reckless’.

I wrote the songs in April - Aug 2019.. ‘I Wanna Play (Rock & Roll)’ and ‘Danger Zone 2’, were also strangely, written in my childhood bedroom in 15 minutes, whilst also staying there for a night. 'Evelina' is an old song that'd been around for years, and whilst working a lot from coffee shops, I came up with the right concept that brought the song to life for The Milkshakes.. I LOVE this one!

Primarily, I made this album late in the summer of 2019 to try and distract and lift myself from the passing of my GREAT, MAGIC, inspirational, legendary friend and partner in crime of 20 years Michael Monk.

I was subsequently stressed recording this. Under pressure only from myself, I also had to live up to the magic album we made ‘Can’t Get Arrested!’ in a single day in the same studio a year earlier. This took a lot longer, but the band stuff was still mostly tracked in a day.

The album is much more emotional than I originally intended, as in July 2019 I wrote the song ‘My Favourite Guy’ in grief, which I don’t remember much about. It changes this whole thing but had to be included.
We made 2 versions; originally trying to force a quite wordy song to be a sort of ‘Summer or 69’ type thing and fit the concept. I went with the acoustic version. I know it’s 'only music', but making this song.. and the one time we performed it live a few days after my mate died, was one of the hardest things i've ever done.

Huge thanks to Emily for helping me do this, we’ve been as much of a team doing this album as any we’ve done, and her input, support and patience while I’ve been stressed and indecisive is a blessing. (still not completely sure about the title..)
Also thanks Ash, for the input and amazing, versatile playing. He’s played on and helped us make 3 whole albums in a year, whilst actually living in Greece! He’s a legend

Thanks to the band for indulging the mad concept, and recording songs they didn’t really know live (again).. which is intense!

Cheers! x
